![]() Throughout the year blizzards pummelled the peaks with snow, barricading its surroundings in white mounds. Higher up, an old keep long abandoned rested far above the castle of Attoras, built near the summit and obscured by folds of heaven high spires of rock. The waters there had iconic white pillars circling its boundary, a low icy mist still clinging to its surface. Where the slope allowed for such things was kept the secret enclave with its pool as smooth as a mirror, hidden behind the castle and out of sight from town. Late in the night, when the white moon had danced among the clouds for hours, the wind finally abated, the world holding its breath.Ĭome dawn the sun crested the horizon slowly, illuminating the castle of Attoras, nestled at the rocky foot of the Black Mountains, the morning air crisp. Smoke billowing chimneys from town told of people huddling around a fire, and maybe, at least some of them, speaking amongst each other of the Savage Art. Its ghostly fury was their dead echo and the fear of it was waited out by friend and foe alike. In the end, Henrik disowned his wife for infidelity and always blamed Konrad for driving her away from him, even though his friend never did end up with her. He was too busy trying to woo Henrik's wife, Krisztina. Apparently the group caught on to Konrad's distraction. They had gone hunting with a group of friends. After Henrik sets him up for a confession, Konrad recalls the events of July 2, 1899. Henrik continues to tease at demanding an apology from Konrad for some unnamed offense. Their relationship survived school until the day of an important hunt with friends. In fact, after school Konrad never did join the military. Although Konrad participated, he was never the star that Henrik became, being general and all. In Vienna as children they had met at boarding school. Clearly he blames Konrad for something from that day they split, the cause for their long estrangement. The major plot line of this book follows Henrik's bitter line of questioning to his friend, drawing him along in a reminiscence on the past. Apparently some incident occurred on Jwhich has kept them estranged for 41 years and 43 days as Konrad so aptly recalls. In fact they were childhood friends from military school. When the stranger arrives, he clearly knows Henrik. Immediately he invites the man for dinner. One day a stranger visits the village and Henrik hears about him. He's a misanthropic war veteran who stays isolated because he refuses to participate in the progress of modernism in his country, preferring to dwell on nostalgia for simpler times.
